The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has enjoined the acting Inspector General Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to arrest and prosecute quack nurses and midwives.
The national president of the association, Abdulrafiu Adeniji, made this known when he led a delegation on a visit to the Police Headquarters in Abuja.
He said evidence had revealed that operators of private hospitals and clinics did not bother to employ qualified and licensed nurses and midwives because they wanted to maximize profit. He added that there was need for government enforcement agencies, especially the police, to arrest quacks impersonating nurses in private health institutions in the country.
He said there was need to carry out constant supervisory exercises on such health centres by teams from the association of nurses and midwives and the police.
Responding on behalf of the acting IGP, the Force Medical Officer, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Kaumi Ahmadu, assured the association of police support.
He said the police was already working with state governments to ensure that quacks were identified, arrested and prosecuted.
