Students of Electrical Engineering Department of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, have designed a patient to doctor emergency notification system for use in hospitals.
In a press release sent to Nigerian Pilot, Tuesday from Federal Polytechnic, Bida, it said that the new device made up of a transmitter and receiver, was made with main purpose of patients’ getting doctor’s attention in times of emergency.
Some of the students Emmanuel Osarhumen and Olapade Olu Peter who are among among the inventors, noted that the transmitter which covers about 0- 80 kilometers uses a wireless signal .
They explained that the transmitter would be placed at the bedside of the patient in each ward, and that when the patient required attention of the doctor or health worker, he or she would only press the red button on the transmitter while the receiver section consists of an LCD display and buzzer, which is placed in the doctor’s office, and when a patient presses the red button on the transmitter, the doctor would receive a notification on the receiver section displaying the ward and bed (a buzzer alarm); adding that in case the doctor falls asleep the alarm keeps beeping. Furthermore, they stated that their motivation for this was to save lives and the time of patients and nurses running to the doctor’s office in case of an emergency in a ward.
Emmanuel said, “my motivation to carry out this work started when I visited a sick friend at a medical centre and at night the patient in another ward started having crisis and doctors attention was needed but there was nobody with the patient he was unable to walk nor talk, I went to the ward and found him on the floor, this motivated me to go for this project.”
In the same vein, the former Head of Department of Electrical Engineering Department, Engineer Abdulhraheem who supervised the project work, said he was really impressed with the students coming up with the idea, stating that hospitals really needed the device in order to reduce the number of casualties, “because with this device all you need to do is to press the button and the doctor sees the notification, displaying the ward and bed.’’
