The high incidence of measles infection amongst children in Africa especially Nigeria, has been linked to the poor level of exclusive breastfeeding and poor diet among women.
The Deputy Director Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilisation of the Federal Capital Territory Primary Health Care Board, (FCTPHCB), Hauwa Yusuf made this known during a media orientation on the 2018 Measles Vaccination Campaign in the FCT. She also noted that one of the noticeable gaps in the 2015 immunisation campaign implementation was the lack of awareness on immunisation date, target group and location of vaccination posts.
“Measles is more common in Africa especially Nigeria because most women do not carry out exclusive breastfeeding.
Also, most women do not take the required diets that will nourish them. “Our environment is also responsible; measles virus are droplets and our environment is very dusty, so we need to protect our children since they can contact the measles virus through our dusty environment.”
Yusuf who emphasised on the crucial role of the media in a successful measles vaccination campaign, urged media organisations to build public confidence for the measles campaign and help create a positive environment that would enable the campaign capture all eligible children who had missed the vaccination at the health facilities within the FCT.
UNICEF Consultant, Community for Development, Glory Ochi-Oji, reiterated that the follow up measles vaccination campaign would capture no fewer than 619,000 children in 3998 settlements within the six area councils in the FCT.
