President Muhammadu Buhari has flagged off the primary healthcare centre kuchigoro as a model for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The flag off took place today in kuchigoro, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in Abuja.

Mr President said that revitalization of the Primary Healthcare Centres (PHC) across the nation would ensure quality and qualitative healthcare service delivery to the people of Nigeria.

President Buhari emphasized that the programme would focus on the poor especially women and children under 5 years in the rural areas of the country.

Buhari informed that the revitalization of the 10,000 PHC in the country by using a phased approach was in line with the agenda of the APC led Government in the Health Sector.

He also said that the programme would be replicated in 109 wards, one Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) per senatorial zone in the 36 states and FCT.

He described that the PHC kuchigoro as a model primary healthcare centre where quality health care services would be obtained at little or no cost to the beneficiaries.

President Buhari commended the Federal Ministry of Health under the leadership of Prof. Isaac Adewole, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Sterling Bank and General Electric for the renovation and provision of equipment at the kuchigoro PHC.

He also announced that accountability mechanism had been set up to make it functional.

He called on the State Governors to make the revitalization of primary healthcare centres as a vital part of their health agenda.

He also said that Federal Government through the Saving One Million Lives Initiative (SOML) has provided 1.5 Million USD to each State Government and FCT to provide quality healthcare to women and children.

In his welcome address, the Hon. Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole said that the revitalization of PHC across the country would bring healthcare services to the doorsteps of all Nigerians which consequently would lead to the achievement of Universal Health Coverage.

Prof. Adewole said that the flag- off of the PHC revitalisation programme was significant and symbolic given that PHC was the fulcrum of the health system and services rendered at this level are entirely people centred.

In his goodwill message, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Sarki, who was represented by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Primary Healthcare, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, lauded the programme and also pledged the support of the senate in achieving Primary Healthcare initiative in the Country.
