The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has resolved to probe the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Lagos over allegation of expired drugs.
At a session with the management of the hospital yesterday, the committee also resolved to probe a controversial offsetting of medical bills at the hospital to the tune of N638,380.
The probe was necessitated by the query raised by the office of the Auditor General of the Federation for 2013.
The auditor general’s report said the expired drugs, worth about N406,103 were destroyed in unclear circumstances, which resulted in the query. Chairman of the committee, Rep Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers), said the committee would conduct an investigation into the two queries raised to ascertain the true situation of the matter.
He named Rep Ossai Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta) as the chairman of the subcommittee to probe the matter and report back in three weeks.
Responding, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr Olurotimi Odunubi, insisted that the drugs were duly destroyed.
“All expired drugs from 2007 to 2012 were boarded and buried in February 2013. These include all the above drugs. Due process for boarding was followed,” he said. The session was adjourned to April 18 for the subcommittee to present its report.
