The House of Representatives on Wednesday rejected the 2017 budgetary proposals of the National Health Insurance Scheme over the raging crisis on the suspension of the Executive Secretary of the agency, Prof. Yusuf Usman.
It also turned down the budget of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.
The House and the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, had been on the warpath over the suspension of Usman while its committee was investigating alleged rot in the implementation of the NHIS.
Usman was suspended over allegations of corruption just as the House Committee on Health Services was probing the role of Health Maintenance Organisations in the failure of the NHIS to deliver services. Adewole had been summoned to appear before the committee on Thursday (today), but he wrote the committee to say that he would be unavailable.
At its sitting on Wednesday, the Chairman of the committee, Mr. Chike Okafor, said the committee would not consider the budget of the NHIS until the minister had appeared to explain Usman’s suspension.
Okafor announced that Adewole wrote to say he was out of the country on official engagement.
Members of the committee, including Mr. Tony Nwoye and Mr. Dickson Terkigh, resolved to step down the budget of the NHIS.
In the case of NAFDAC, the committee also rejected its budget because it found out that the name of a former director-general of the agency, Mr. Paul Orhii, was still on the nominal roll.
