Association of Resident Doctors at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, UITH, Ilorin, Kwara State, yesterday staged a peaceful protest to express their grievance over the non- payment of their full salary by the management of the hospital.
The protesting doctors, numbering over 100, displayed placards with different inscriptions such as ‘House Officer Entry Level Should be Lmplemented,’ ‘Stop Remuneration Injustice’ and Neighbouring Hospitals Collect Full Pay,’ among others.
Addressing journalists duringthe protest, the president of the association, Dr Ige Kolawole Alexander said members of the executive council of the association had earlier briefed the hospital management on the non- payment of their members’ full salaries. He said 47 other federal teaching hospitals were paying full salary to their staff and queried why the UITH management and other six hospitals in the country could not do same. “47 other federal teaching hospitals are paying full salaries to its staff except UITH, Ilorin and six others and we believe this is injustice, because we can no longer continue to operate under this type of leadership, we decided to express our grievances through a peaceful protest and to be followed by a three- day warning strike.
“But if the management fails to address our problem after this protest and warning strike, we shall make the warning strike a continuous exercise every month, we shall be embarking on strike until management addresses our problem by paying our full salaries to us.
“As you can see that the Chief Medical Director of UITH, CMD, Dr. Abdulwaheed Olatinwo, has came out to address us, but we are not satisfied with his explanation and we shall continue with strike until management attends to our problem,” Alexander said. Reacting, the UITH management said it was aware of the agitation of the resident doctors, adding that it was awaiting the approval and release of funds for the full payment of their salaries from the Federal Ministry of Health.
The head of Corporate Affairs Unit, UITH, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Omojasola, however, appealed to the members of the association to continue to discharge their duties in the interest of patients.
