Angered by the gruesome murder of one of their colleagues, Dr (Mrs) Florence Onua ,the members of the Nigerian Medical Association(NMA) Rivers state chapter took to the streets on Wednesday, 10/05/17, to register their displeasure.
Every member was mandated to wear black tops to feed the mood of the march. Takeoff point for the march was at the popular Maxillofacial Hospital located at Garrison .
By looking at the wry faces of the doctors, it was evident that they were not happy with the security situation in the state. Many of them went down memory lane to narrate the ugly incidents of 2014 and early 2014 were doctors were incessantly kidnapped while some died in kidnappers den in the state.
It is still a puzzle why doctors who barely eke out a living ridiculously become the targets of kidnappers when there are rich politicians and oil company workers.
It is on record and internationally-undisputed fact that humanitarian workers are not subjected to inhuman treatments or attacked during conflicts; clear example is the Red Cross Society who supplies humanitarian materials to both sides during a war.
Dr(Mrs) Obelebra Adebiyi, the Vice Chairman of the association and only female in the male-dominated SOC( State Officers’ Committee); and her boss,Dr Datonye Dennis Alasia,The Rivers state NMA chairman
Meanwhile, the members who wore long faces defied the inclement weather to march along the ever busy Aba road en route the Rivers state Government in order to hear from the Chief Security Officer of the state.
