Rotary International has restated commitment to sustaining the campaign in eradication of polio, which has left many children crippled in several developing countries including Nigeria.
At a press briefing yesterday in Awka, the District governor, Rotary International district 9142, Pharm. Emma Ude Akpeh disclosed that Rotarians have been involved in the campaign to keep polio off the face of the world since 1970. Akpeh said the district comprises Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, Cross River and Akwa Iboms states, adding that Rotarians from all these states would converge in Awka this weekend for the first ever district governors’ installation.
He disclosed that from the daily case of 10,000 in the past, the whole of 2016 has just 46 cases of polio left, with the disease presently recorded in only three countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.
He also highlighted other Rotary services to humanity, including literacy, provision of water, preservation of nature among others, saying that a 40 feet container of text books has been donated to the Prof. Kenneth Dike state library, Awka by the club to honour the late scholar and enrich the library.
