The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Mohammed Nasir Sambo, has sought the amendment of the scheme’s enabling law for better coverage.
He said the organisation was entrenching values and result-driven processes in its operations and ensuring the immediate resolution of all Treasury Single Account (TSA) issues to allow for the investment of NHIS funds and the introduction of innovative balancing mechanisms for mobilisation of more money to access the unreached.

Speaking at a meeting with enrollees of the scheme yesterday in Abuja, Sambo recalled that the NHIS was established for every Nigerian to access good healthcare at minimal cost. He regretted that the scheme had suffered protracted challenges, including internal disharmony, high turnover of CEOs, squabbles, weak programme foundation and poor regulatory role in its 20 years of existence.
