The Senate yesterday accused the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf of violating the Federal Character law in the recruitment of general managers for the agency.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso (APC, Ogun) during a meeting with the management of the NHIS said “We have a petition that you are accused of violating the Federal Character in recruitment of general managers. In August the agency had 23 general managers, now we have 25.

“Before your appointment, North Central had 3 general managers, now is 5, North East 3 now 4, North West 6 now 9, South South 4 now 3, South East 3 now 3 and South West 4 now 1,” he said.

Tejuoso demanded for the nominal role of Agency. The committee also queried the agency for spending N402million on training in October.

But in his response, the NHIS boss faulted the claim, saying “I have not hired anybody, what we did was secondment. “I will beg of you to give me a copy of the petition. We cannot forget that petition and for fair hearing I need to get a copy,” he said.

He pledged to provide the nominal role of the agency and details of the N402million training expenditure.
