Workers of the newly commissioned Ahmadu Bello University’s (ABU) Medical Centre, including doctors and other health officers,on Monday embarked on indefinite strike action.

According to a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the university written by the joint unions of the medical centre and Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, the strike was called following the inability of the management to implement the agreement reached with the unions.

The four union leaders that signed the letter, Dr. Aminu Mohammi of NADUHS, Hassan Garba, NAAT, Sanusi M. Garba, NASU, and Yusuf D. Haruna, NANNM, said the medical centre and other sectors under their control would remain close until the management address their grievances.

The letter reads in part; “we wish to inform the management of our resolve to resume our suspended strike action base on your inability to fulfil and implement the clarification from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission and also for not honouring the MOU signed between the management and medical health workers union.”

Efforts to get the head of the ABU’s university health services, Dr.Hawwa Madugu, were in vain as she was said to be attending a management meeting.
