A total of 6, 915 cancer cases were recorded at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) cancer registry over a 27-year period comprising 2891 males and 4024 females, a Professor of Pathology Department in the university, Mandong Barnabas Mafala has revealed.
Delivering the 83rd Inaugural Lecture of University of Jos yesterday titled ‘Emperor of all Diseases,’ Professor Mafala said the cancer cases had an annual prevalence of 256 cases. These figures, he said, reflect both inpatients records and referrals from neighbouring states in North Central Nigeria and Southern Kaduna State.
“Diet high in saturated fats or fat from animal source is strongly linked to cancer of the colon, stomach and breast, while a weak link has been established for prostrate cancer. These observations were noticed in communities that are affluent compared to resource-poor communities where starvation is prevalent and life expectancy is less than 50 years,” he said.
