The United Nations Children's Education Fund (UNICEF) Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Victoria Isiramen, has said 10 percent of the adolescents in Nigeria are living with HIV.
Dr. Isiramen stated this at the clos-ing ceremony of a two-week Na-tional Mentorship and Leadership Training programme for Adoles-cents Living with HIV (ALHIV) in Nigeria.
It was organised by the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), in collaboration with the Positive Action For Treatment Access (PATA), and supported by UNICEF.
Young Nigerians from Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Kaduna and Lagos States and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja were camped at the Ronik Comprehensive Secondary, School, Ejigbo in Lagos State. The programme was to build capacities in mentorship and leadership virtues, and teach them how to be advocates for sexual and reproductive health and the rights of ado-lescents living with HIV.
According to the communiqué issued at the end of the programme, as at 2014, about 196,000 adolescents, between the ages of 10-19, were liv-ing with HIV, and about 11,000 died of AIDS-related ailments in 2013. The estimated adolescent population in Nigeria is 38,882,000. An estimated 17,000 adolescents were infected with HIV in 2013, according to UNICEF report.
Therefore, young Nigerians want decision makers to address the policy against pre-admission HIV test and other forms of discrimination against adolescents and young peo-ple seeking admission into learning institutions.
