United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) said it is worried over the increasing rate of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Ekiti State.

Ekiti State, according to the UN agency, records over 72 percent of FGM among female children between the age zero and 14 years. UNICEF consultant on FGM in Ekiti, Oyo and Osun States, Mrs Aderonke Olutayo, expressed the concern at a stakeholders meeting of the state technical committee in Ado Ekiti.
She said that some female teenagers and adults, even up to marriage age in Ekiti State are being circumcised.
The state Health Commissioner, Doctor Olurotimi Ojo, said the over 72 percent prevalence rate of the act in the state ranks it high in FGM, calling for concerted efforts to end the practice in the state.
