Posted on: Sat 20-05-2017

This is a breakdown of Mr Alfred Aderibigbe while in court testifying in his defence against the claims that he killed Senetor Adeleke. Mr Alfred while in court and under oath says he is a Registered Nurse and that he graduated from the School of Nursing, Osogbo From 1988 - May 1992.

Below is a play by play of the events that took place in court on the 18th of May 2017:

The court is set and ready to hear the testimony of Mr. Alfred Aderibigbe, the man who injected Adeleke with banned substances.

At exactly 12:04pm, Mr. Alfred Aderibigbe took the stand and takes his oath in Yoruba. You would recall that when he first appeared in court, Mr Aderibigbe's lawyer said he client could not speak English.

When asked to identify himself for the court, who the senetor was and how long they had known each other by the prosecuting lawyer: The witness said his name was Alfred Idowu Aderibigbe, a nurse, living at his country home, Ede and works as a nurse at the Out-patient department, General Hospital, Ede. He also said that Senetor Adeleke was his helper, and had known him for about 20yrs

NOTE: Mr. Alfred Aderibigbe's testimony was in Yoruba.

On how he and the deceased first met, the witness said that one late Dr. Adeyemi introduced him to the then former governor Adeleke many years back and that this was when he had successfully treated his daughter on convulsion many years ago. On that occasion, the late senator gave him money in appreciation, and the relationship blossomed from there. He likened the relationship between them to that of a father and son.

When asked how many individuals treated the late senetor, Mr Alfred replied that while he regularly treats the late Senator in Ede, there were other nurses in Lagos and Abuja who attended to him while he was away from home but denied knowing any of them in person.

The P.L then asks where these treatments take place; Mr Aderibigbe said he often treated the late Senetor in his bedroom, but when he meets him outside, he moves him to the bedroom for treatment.

On wheather he had any idea of other ailments, Alfred said Sen. Adeleke was hypertensive and suffered from Gout.

On any measures taken; Mr. Alfred said he always warned Sen. Adeleke to take enough rest.

The P.L asked if Mr. Alfred was aware that the senetor drank and smoked; Mr Alfred replied that he was aware the late Sen. took alcoholic drinks mostly St. Remy Martins regularly anytime he saw him drinking, but insisted that he doesn't smoke anymore. Alfred said the late Senator used to smoke, but he stopped due to his intervention and his warnings on lung cancer in 2009/2010.

On how the drugs were acquired; Alfred said when the senator calls him for treatment, he would usually ask him to go get medication for him. For the gout, he said the sen. would usually bring up out the injection, and when its not enough, he would get more injection. Mr. Alfred then said that both he and Sen. Adeleke had known the supplier of the injections for the treatment of gout for a long time, this was because since the injections are sold on prescription, the sellers would refuse, but they request to speak to Sen before selling to him.

The prosecutor asked at this point if the drugs were gotten with a prescription and if anyone had ever question him on his treating the senetor at home; Mr. Alfred said he buys the drug from sellers WITHOUT doctor's prescription. Though, claiming he had NEVER prescribed the injections to Sen Adeleke himself. Alfred said that for over a period of about 20 years he had been treating the late senator, he had never been challenged by his family and friends, but only Sen Adeleke's sister, Dupe Sanni 6yrs ago challenged him, but the late sen intervened and asked her to mind her own business.

On the nature of his relationship with Senetor Adeleke and his family; Mr. Alfred said he had a very good relationship with Sen. Adeleke's immediate family members. And that because of this he lives at the back of Sen. Adeleke's country home because the late senator secured the land for him because he didn't want him to be far away from him.

At this stage the Prosecutor asks Mr Alfred to recount the events that ocurred leading to the death of Sen. Adeleke; Mr Alfred said that on the day the Senator died, at around 4am, people came to his house to request his presence on behalf of the senator. It was at that moment that he realised that the senator, his friend, Dipo Fagborode and a couple of other people had been calling his line for about 16 times. He says that when he called back the senator, Dipo picked up the call, but the senator immediately collected the handset to complaint about his gout. Thereafter, the senator asked him to come along with his injections, and that when he got there, he found out that the senetor was in pain.

Alfred Says, when he got there, the senator requested if had drip with him, and told him 1 by 1 the oral medications he had with him. Mr Alfred said that since the 17th of April, the late senator had always kept the injection with him, which were prescribed to him from Lagos and that the Dr who prescribed it had Dr. shown him the prescription, but refused to handover the prescription to him.

At first he said he checked Sen. Adeleke's BP which read 130/80; his temp 38.4; Pulse 86.  Then to give his IV's he used cotton wool to clean his aRm to look for a vein. When asked to ID the drubs with the late senetor he said they included 4 ampoules of Diazapram 40ml, 2 ampoules of Analgin 100ml, hydrocortisone 200ml two vials , Fortuine 1ml and Gentamicin 160ml. He also said that the prescription showed him by the late Sen. showed 20ml of , 1 ampoules of analgine 50ml when neccessary through IM and hydrocortisone 200ml IV was administered on the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke. nursingworldnigeria.com

Before administering the injection, he said he asked if he has taken medication and the senator affirmed it to him. He also said he administered just 1 ampoule of diazaprem (valium), but broke 3 ampoules, but says he didn't administer all and he was with him until the drip finished and left at 7.50am Says he had to leave to go and take permission from church where he takes Sunday School.

Mr Alfed said that when he left, the senator's friend Dipo was with him and he asked him to monitor him but that when he arrived not to long after, the senator still maintained the same position. As he was abut leaving the room, he mentioned that the senator beckoned on him, with a weak hand, "so he had to perform a cardiac massage on him" with Dipo helping out so he could breath, but all to no avail

When he realised that the senetor wasnt responding, he shouted for help so they could transport him to the clinic mentioning that from the house to Biket, the Senator WOULD have died (ati ku) but using 0ne way they were able to get to the clinic on time.

On arrival at the clinic, the doctor examined the late senator and asked Alfred for a brief medical history. After explaining to the Dr. at Biket hospital, Alfred says the doctor told him that his actions were "normal treatment". However, Dr. Adenle of Biket confirmed Sen. Adeleke dead... DOA... Dead On Arrival and by that time, the whole hospital was crowded. H still insisted at this point that the drugs he had given the late senetor were Valium and Analgin. This was a result of Dipo and one of Senator's guard ran back home to bring the medication he used on him. When the arrived, they took all the vials which he didn't use, plus the ones he used to Dr. Adenle and other family members.

When asked at what moment he heard that it might have been an overdose that killed the senetor, Alfred said he started hearing OVERDOSE from inside the doctor's room, which infuriated people more. Shortly after that, the corpse of Senator Adeleke was placed inside his Cadillac and driven to Ede for burial. However, on his way back to Ede, a police orderly called that his corpse is being taken back to LAUTECHTH for post-morterm.

Alfred says the corpse arrived LAUTECHTH around 3pm for the post mortem, and from there he was taken in by the Police. From there he wrote several statements and spent about 6 days in police custody. Alfed Aderibigbe says was released on administrative bail the 2nd of May 2017 and is currentluy in protective custody so he wouldn't be lynched and he hasnt been able to go back home.

The Prosecutor asked Mr Alfred why the senetor kept the drusgs on him as stated by Alfred, his reply was that most times, the late Senator usually buy the injections in large quantity from Abuja this was because a few years back, the late senator's room had been ransacked and some injections stolen with the thieves thinking it was money. Alfred says the senator didn't know of the robbery, until a night he needed his injections.

Mr Alfred broke don in tears at this point and collapsed but immediately stands up to his feet after.

The Prosecutor then asked where Mr Alfred works and what profession he's a part of, His reply:
At the moment, I currently work at Comprehensive Health Centre Edun Abon, as a Chief Nurse Officer and i am a level 14 Step 3 officer. Alfred said he graduated from the nursing school in 1982. He has 25years experience under his kitty. When asked, Alfred said he didn't know his nursing registration number offhand and that he doesn't know if he pays practising fee as a nurse.

Asked by LAUTECHTH's lawyer if he is community health officer or a nurse, Alfred insist he is a nurse. At this stage more questions were coming over Alfred's competence as a qualified nurse.

Asked if by rules of medical practice, he his allowed to keep injection for at home for patient, Alfred says NO. He also says he did not see or have any prescription for the Gentamicine injection he administered on Dipo, the sen's friend. He denied owning a pharmacy in his house, but had gentamicine at home as a remnant of what he had used before.

Asked if it was proper for patients to prescribe drugs for him as a nurse, he says no, but the sen & his friend where POWERFUL. That is they were too powerful to resist.

When asked who the last persons to see the senetor were, Alfed says he and Dipo where the last two people to see the late Senator Alive.

Alfred says Diazapram is sedative, hydrocortisone is a steriod and Analgin is a analgesic, a pain reliver. Alfred says when he came back from church around at 9am, there was LITTLE LIFE in Sen. Adeleke. When asked what the term meant, he said LITTLE LIFE means the senator pulse was not pronounced and his breathing was almost shutting down, and that when he came back from church around 9am, the senator was half alive, half dead. #AtTheInquest

Asked why he took more than required to the Senator's house that morning, he said that is his usual practice. Says usually on arrival, they pick the injection they need and he (Alfred, keeps the rest) Asked why he broke all the vials when he knew he shouldn't use everything, Alfred says the Sen usually insist on using everything, and that the Senetor would usually ask for overdose, he would open everythin, but use his legs to pour others away. Though he claims he has never used the overdose on the Senator he usually pour it away, but just open it in the senator's present.

Alfred says he has been treating Sen. Adeleke for 15 years, but started treating him for Gout in 2009. Though he says he knows the consumption of Alcohol usually exacerbate Gout, says he advised the senetor to stop his intake of alcohol, and he stopped for a while. but he later continued with only Remy Martins and not other alcohol. Alfred says he never asked the late senator on the level of alcohol before admitting Steriods on him.

Alfred also says he doesn't know that its improper to take Alcohol and Analgesic together says he doesnt know that its improper to take a med in its oral form, & then take the same in the form of an injection if the 1st doesn't work. Alfred said he has never bought analgin and that the Senator usually buys it and give it to him to keep.

Alfred says he asked the senator when last he eat, and he said the previous night, but did not say what he ate, Alfred says he has not returned home since the sen died because the senetors people & family believes he was the one that killed him. Alfred however denied this.

When asked if he had percieved the smell of alcohol on the senetor while treating him, Alfred said he did not perceive the smell of Alcohol on Senator Adeleke. This is in dif=rect contrast to earlier reports as you would recall, the pathologists claimed the corpse of the late senator was oozing of alcohol during his testimony yesterday.

Alfred says it is not the heavy sedative the senator was under that caused is aspiration, which resulted in his death. The witness, Alfred Aderibigbe after this stepped down from the witness box and the proceedings were adjourned till the following day.
