The University of West London’s Emeritus Professor of Nursing, Elizabeth Anionwu, has been made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). Professor Anionwu was awarded the honour in the 2017 New Year Honours List for services to nursing and the Mary Seacole statue appeal.
Professor Anionwu is a national nursing pioneer who is seen by women and those from an ethnic minority background as a role model and mentor. She ran the first UK nurse-led sickle/thalassaemia screening and genetic counselling service, and campaigned tirelessly for the recognition of Mary Seacole, the Jamaican nurse who gave exemplary service during the Crimean War. This culminated in the unveiling of a statue in her honour in 2016 as well as ensuring that her life and work is included in the school curriculum. Commenting on the award, Professor Peter John, Vice-Chancellor of the University of West London said, ‘This is a welcome and well deserved recognition of the valuable and enduring contribution Professor Anionwu has made to the nursing profession and nursing education. We are very proud of her achievements and extend our heartfelt congratulations to her.’
UWL’s College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare is the top ranking School in London for overall satisfaction among students. It is also ranked fifth in England and ninth in the United Kingdom.
