With aid from donor support (USAID), CRS/Nigeria is implementing a field based program beginning in four LGAs in Sokoto State designed to improve the food and financial security levels of 24,000 of the most vulnerable households and one AC in FCT for 6,000 similar households.
Primarily this will be through the improvement of savings.
Position: Consultants [X2 Persons]
Location: Abuja and Sokoto State - Nigeria.
Duties/Responsibilities:
This consultancy will examine nutrition and hygiene practices in selected communities in FCT and Sokoto State with a focus on understanding barriers to best practices.
The specific objectives of the assignment include:
>Describe current practices and identify household and caregiver characteristics that influence negative and positive nutrition and hygiene behaviors:
Household nutrition, including typical meal times and content, and how food is allocated within the household
Child feeding behaviors for children 0-6 months, 6-11 months, and 12-23 months including breastfeeding practices, frequency of feeding, types/variety of foods given, density of foods given, food proportions, and any changes that occur during a child’s illness
Women’s diet during pregnancy, including any change or food taboos
Healthy timing and spacing of pregnancy, including delay of pregnancy until 18 years and spacing of births by 24 months or more
Hygiene behaviors including hand washing at critical moments, use of soap, availability of hand washing station, and food preparation hygiene
>Conduct barrier analysis for key high-impact infant and young child feeding and hygiene behaviors where current adoption is low (precise behaviors to be agreed in protocol).
>Identify primary and auxiliary child caregivers and key decision makers related to household nutrition and key factors that influence their decision making around both adult and child feeding
>Determine the most appropriate modes of communication and the best venues to achieve behavior change
>Determine the most appropriate messages lo be communicated to facilitate positive changes in nutrition and hygiene behaviors in the specific context.
Qualifications/Requirements:
The Consultant will be a professional research organization (or individual) with track record of at least 5 years of surveys and studies in Nigeria. The Consultant’s team will need to demonstrate their experience both in The lead consultant should have:
>PhD in Anthropology, Public Heath or relevant Social Sciences
>Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible work experience in research on nutrition and public health
>Knowledge of current developments in the fields of formative research, behavioral sciences and public nutrition; training in barrier analysis strongly preferred
>Proven ability to lead research teams
>Fluency in English and knowledge of Hausa.
