Five days of strike by the over 400 contract health workers and gardeners at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) has led to a mass of filth and unpleasant smell in the various wards and toilets.
Our correspondents who visited the hospital yesterday discovered overflowing waste bins and unclean toilets in the various wards. Bed spaces were clean only because relatives of patients took the initiative to do the cleaning.

The contract workers hired by M&G, Crystal Global and Rimfore companies as contract staff are protesting almost 11 months of unpaid salaries. The managers of the companies had addressed the gathering of striking workers yesterday and appealed to them to resume work on the assurance that they would be paid two months’ salary arrears by month end. The striking workers reluctantly agreed on the condition that they would resume their strike action should the company failed to honour the agreement.
The managers of the contracted companies had declined speaking to journalists but the workers had agreed to empty the bins yesterday and resume work fully on Wednesday.
The head of Public Relations unit in JUTH, Haruna Zubairu Manzo said the workers were a responsibility of the Federal Government and that the Federal Ministry of Health had already carried out a verification exercise of outstanding liabilities.”
