An expert with the World Health Organisation (WHO) Bassey Enya Bassey, has advised the Federal Ministry of Health, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigerian Meteorological Agency, (NIMET) and other flood management ministries, departments and agencies to create an interagency platform for research on flood related diseases.
He said doing so would allow scientists to use combined models to assess, monitor and track flood-related communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance. He gave the advice yesterday in Abuja during the one day colloquium organised by the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, FCT branch. The theme of the colloquium was “Perennial flooding in Nigeria: Communicable diseases and looming antimicrobial resistance.”
Bassey said it was important that flood management agencies and the Nigeria public understood that flood events augments disease transmission factors which in turn contribute to infectious disease outbreaks.
He said there should be more robust surveillance of infectious diseases cov-ering the before, middle, and post-flood periods, he said.
