Director General of the World Health Organisation, WHO, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, has hailed Senate President Bukola Saraki, over his commitment towards ensuring that Nigeria’s primary healthcare system was strengthened by the inclusion of one per cent of the country’s Consolidated Revenue Fund, CRF, to be used to provide basic primary healthcare services across the country.
Olu Onemola, the Special Assistant on New Media to Saraki, in a tweet on his personal Twitter handle, @DrTedros, also said that political will was needed to provide universal healthcare coverage. “Good news, the President of the Senate of #Nigeria @BukolaSaraki committed to ensure one percent of the Consolidated Revenue Fund is included in Nigeria’s budget to strengthen primary healthcare.
Political will at all levels is needed for #HealthForAll,” the WHO Director General tweeted to the Senate President’s official handle @SPNigeria.
Earlier last week, Saraki, in a keynote address delivered at the 58th Annual General and Scientific Conference of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, stated that Universal Healthcare was a promise that he and his colleagues in the National Assembly had made to Nigerians and it was one that they were also determined to keep.
