The Yobe State University Teaching Hospital is equipped to make it unnecessary for Yobe people to seek medical care outside the state. The state Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Dr. Muhammad Bello Kawuwa, who said this during an interview with Daily Trust, asserted that the hospital would indeed curb medical tourism from Nigeria.
“We have the latest technology and the hospital is intended to make considerable contribution to curbing medical tourism by Nigerians to other countries. Primarily, we want Yobe people not to have to be referred away from the state,” Kawuwa said.
The teaching hospital is essentially built to service the state university located within the same Yobe State capital, Damaturu, but the health commissioner insisted that the hospital would do much more than just train the medical students of the university. “Referrals are normal around the world, but by the coming of the teaching hospital we want to reduce the need for referrals outside Yobe to the barest minimum. We want to acquire the necessary facilities, employ the right professionals and attract people to the state for quality tertiary health care delivery,” he asserted.
The Yobe University Teaching Hospital is an ambitious ultra-modern facility which the state government has spent billions of naira to equip and which Governor Ibrahim Gaidam allocated in 2014 a newly completed three-star hotel to serve as staff and students’ accommodation, a gesture said to have demonstrated the governor’s determination to stop at nothing in making the hospital a centre of excellence.
“The hospital rolled out services on the 15th of April 2017, so, it’s already a reality,” the health commissioner told Daily Trust.
