Anambra Doctors Suspend Strike

On 18/Jul/2019 / In Medical News

Resident doctors of the Anambra State-owned Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, have suspended their two-month strike.
In a statement by both the president and secretary of the association, Obinna Aniagboso  and Chidiebele Egolum, they said the strike was suspended for a month to enable more arbitration.
The doctors commenced their strike on May 13  due to the failure of the state government to honour its agreement to implement full CONMESS for doctors and upgrade diagnostic facilities in the hospital as befitting of a tertiary health centre.

In the statement, the doctors claimed that there was a consensus by concerned parties that their strike was just “and therefore the need to address their challenges in order to retain trained and experienced personnel and improve the standard of clinical services in COOUTH.
The statement read in part, “We also took cognisance of the resolution of the NMA leadership and elders’ meeting which advised ARD to suspend the strike for one month along with the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria.
“We considered the plight of our teeming patients who have become stranded and deprived of quality care throughout our protracted industrial action.
“We also accepted the concessions made by management on internal issues bordering on conditions of service and withheld remuneration, and intend to cooperate to ensure its full implementation.”
While condemning what they called infusion of personal interests into their struggle as a result of “inordinate personal ambitions”, the doctors maintained  that ARD had never advocated the removal of the Chief Medical Director of the institution.
The statement added, “We take this bold step in good faith with the expectation that the state government and management of COOUTH will not relent in their end until our agreed objectives are fully actualised.”
