The President of the Nigerian Spine Society, Dr Kabiru Abubakar, says the country is in dire need of spine experts to attend to the numerous cases of spine diseases in the country. Abubakar said this in Lagos on Friday at the inaugural conference of the society.
He said, “The major challenge is that there are many patients compared to the number of trained doctors that can operate on them. We need to train more experts for us to have a balanced equation.” Abubakar advised the federal and state governments to wade in by getting facilities necessary for the treatment of spine diseases and support for patients.
“The facilities to use for those that are trained are also very expensive and therefore scarce to come by in the country. The government must therefore look to getting the necessary facilities for the society.
“We must also get some structures in place to assist those who need intervention financially. Not every citizen can pay from their pocket; yet, spine disease is common in our society,” Abubakar said. Also, United State-based neurosurgeon, Prof. Wale Sulaimon, advised the government to invest in teaching hospitals, saying most patients go there for treatment.
He said, “Most of the patients that have spine problem go to the government hospitals for treatment. In order to help them get a good outcome, there is the need to invest in these hospitals. “These hospitals must not lack the necessary equipment and manpower to handle such situation,” Sulaimon said.
According to the Tropical Medical Journal Research, spinal cord injuries account for a significant proportion of musculoskeletal injuries worldwide. The reported annual incidence of traumatic spinal cord injuries varies from 2.3 million to 83 million people worldwide.
“When the spinal cord is injured, the results can be devastating and may result in death or long-term disability,” the report stated.
