Gunmen have abducted four medical doctors and three other health workers in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State.Three other health workers kidnapped alongside the doctors were a pharmacist, a dentist and a nurse.

The incident occurred in Okolomade community at about 11p.m. on Saturday.

A source reported that the kidnappers, who stormed the area in two speed boats, shot sporadically into the community, causing the villagers to escape to a nearby bush for safety, before whisking away their victims.

Also, it was gathered that the health workers from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) were carrying out free medical outreach in the area before they were abducted.

The Executive Director, Finance and Administration of NDDC, Dr. Itotenaan Ogiri, who hails from the community, brought some NDDC medical doctors to offer free medical treatment to people of the area early last week and were expected to remain there for about three weeks.

It was also gathered that the kidnappers made away with the cell phones of all the people residing at the doctors’ lodge.

Daily Sun gathered that the Personal Assistant to Ogiri on Youths, who is a former councillor, Toghoni Okowa, narrowly escaped being kidnapped as he told the kidnappers at the waterside that he was a visitor to the community. In the meantime, the abductors have not demanded any ransom.

Reacting to the incident, Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Abua/Odual Local Government Council, Udi Odum, described the kidnappers as “criminals” from a neighbouring community in Bayelsa State.

The kidnappers reportedly escaped through the Oluasiri route of Nembe in Bayelsa State after abducting the medical personnel.
