In a dramatic turn of events, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has officially suspended its nationwide strike, following an emergency negotiation with the Federal Government.

The strike, which began as a 15-day ultimatum and escalated into a 7-day warning action, was triggered by years of unresolved demands. But after a high-stakes meeting on August 1st involving the Ministers of Health, Labour, and other key stakeholders, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed — promising time-bound implementation of nurses’ nine core demands.

“In view of the formal agreement reached and in line with the principle of dialogue and good faith, NEC hereby suspends the ongoing nationwide strike action immediately,” the NEC declared.

Key Resolutions:

  • Strike suspended immediately nationwide.
  • State Councils directed to mobilize nurses for immediate resumption of duty.
  • No victimization of any nurse, intern, or locum staff who participated in the strike.
  • National leadership to monitor FG’s compliance with the MoU timelines.

The NEC praised the solidarity and resilience of Nigerian nurses and reaffirmed its commitment to defending their welfare, dignity, and professional rights.

“This is not the end — it’s a new beginning for Nigerian nurses,” said Com. Nurse Haruna Mamman, National President.
