Lagos Doctors Begin Three-Day Strike Over Alleged Illegal Pay Cuts

Lagos, Nigeria — Medical doctors employed by the Lagos State Government have commenced a three-day warning strike starting 8am today, Monday, July 28, 2025, in protest against what they describe as “unjust and illegal salary deductions.”

The strike, organized by the Medical Guild Lagos, affects all medical and dental practitioners under the state’s employment and is scheduled to last until 8am on Thursday, July 31.

At a press conference held at the Guild’s secretariat, the guild condemned the deductions as a “unilateral breach of trust,” revealing that the issue began in April when the Lagos State Treasury Office allegedly slashed doctors’ wages without prior consultation. Although initial deductions were reversed following negotiations, the Guild claims the government resumed the cuts in July, prompting the strike.

“This is not just a breach of agreement, it’s a betrayal,” they stated, adding that the most senior doctor in Lagos State earns less than 1,100usd monthly, making the deductions particularly devastating.

The Guild is demanding:

  • Full reversal of the July deductions
  • Payment of 12 months’ revised CONMESS arrears owed to honorary consultants at LASUTH
  • Immediate intervention by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Government has responded by urging the Guild to suspend the strike, assuring that negotiations are ongoing and contingency plans are in place to minimize disruptions to healthcare services
