MRCG at LSHTM Doctoral Training Program Scholarship

The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine invites applications from Africans citizens for its full-time PhD studentship in the below projects: 

Project 1: Optimising micronutrient status in early infancy: mode and timing of micronutrient interventions (Primary Supervisor, Professor Sophie Moore). 

Eligibility requirements 

Essential 

  • MSc in Nutrition, biochemistry, or another related programme 
  • Expertise in clinical analytical science techniques, or other relevant laboratory techniques 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 

Desirable 

  • Experience with nutritional biomarker analysis 
  • Experience with data analysis and analysis packages (e.g. STATA) 
  • Background in nutrition research

Project 2: Sexually transmitted infections and antimicrobial resistance patterns in The Gambia -molecular diagnostics and genotypic and phenotypic surveillance. 

Eligibility requirements 

Essential 

  • MSc in molecular biology, molecular microbiology, or closely related discipline. 
  • Expertise and experience in laboratory molecular biology techniques. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Interest in the laboratory diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections 
  • Willingness to work with diverse groups of people including closely with field researchers, clinicians and epidemiologists leading the survey. 
  • Willingness to work in rural locations. 

Desirable 

  • Experience of genomic analysis including downstream bioinformatics processing using relevant software packages. 
  • Experience in the laboratory diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections and in the public health implications of diagnoses and antimicrobial resistance.

The studentship starts as soon as the recruitment is done, and will be full-time for four years, involving collaboration with the Medical Research Council Unit the Gambia at LSHTM and a European University.
