The Lagos State government yesterday denied reports that the younger sister of the late Dr. Stella Adadevoh, Amy Ngozi Adadevoh, tested positive to the Ebola Virus Disease.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said at a media briefing that the woman actually had symptoms and when her blood was tested, it was negative and she was discharged.
“The report on the social media yesterday that one of the secondary contacts at the Isolation Centre at IDH in Yaba tested positive is false,” he said.
Idris said the state had screened and tracked a cumulative total of 321 contacts, 159 of whom have been cleared and discharged on completion of the 21-day surveillance period while 158 are still being monitored.
In addition, the commissioner said there was one confirmed contact which tested positive at the isolation centre while there was a contact tested whose result is yet to arrive as at the time of the briefing.
Speaking on the possibility of the seven primary contacts who have been discharged to be re-infected, he said, “They cannot be infected by the strain anymore but they could be infected by another strain”.
He said also, “Clearance certificates are nonetheless issued to contacts that have completed the 21-day maximum incubation period of EVD”.
Idris noted that the state encountered various challenges in case management of Ebola.
He said unconfirmed reports may discourage those who ought to present themselves for treatment. “Not everybody with a fever or haemorrhage has come down with EVD. A situation where these cases are automatically referred to the Mainland General Hospital is not good practice,” he said.
