Experts in the treatment of mental disorder have called on government and Nigerians to support child and adolescent psychiatry treatment.
The experts spoke at a two-week certificate course in child and adolescent psychiatry, organised by the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba; in collaboration with the West African College of Nursing in Lagos.
While speaking at the event on Monday, the Medical Director of FNPHY, Dr. Rahman Lawal, explained that child and adolescent psychiatry was one of the major health aspects that should never be neglected.
“I must confess that this area of treatment is a very tough one. Child and adolescent psychiatry is very important and requires more attention. It is a challenge and we must continue to sensitise the public until the desired attention is achieved.
“Why should Nigerians stigmatise children because of any challenge? It is vital we accept our children the way they are because if they are not healthy, we are not healthy. If they are not well, the future is faulty,” he added.
Executive Secretary of WACN, Mrs. Henrieta Okedo, noted that the spate of abduction, rape and sexual abuse in the country was an indication that child and adolescent psychiatry required development.
