Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has called for the review of the training of health workers in order to address emerging health challenges, especially with the outbreak of Ebola virus in some parts of the country.
Ajimobi, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, at the Examiners Workshop organised by Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, in Ibadan on Tuesday, said because of the life-saving characteristics of medical profession, it was a special field that required frequent review of the training of its practitioners.
The governor said, “The health of the people to a great extent speaks of the effectiveness of the operating system in place to properly manage prevalent and evolving issues. Organisations, such as in the health sector, thus require competence in the area of manpower and adequate infrastructure because of the basic function they perform in the society. As such, this programme is of utmost importance at this point in time.
He added that stakeholders in the health sector had done a lot and more would be done to meet the requirement s of health care delivery system.
“This opportunity to look into the training of our health care personnel should be taken seriously,” Ajimobi warned, saying the establishment of the state College of Nursing and Midwifery was to ensure the delivery of qualitative health care to the citizenry.
The state Director of Nursing Services, Mr. Aderemi Taiwo, said there was the need to expose nurses and midwives to information technology because of its robust opportunities.
