Member of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Anambra has decried the non-implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale (CONMESS) in the state.
A delegation of the association made their feelings known when they met with Gov. Willie Obiano on Monday in Awka.
Presenting their challenges, Dr Eric Anazodo, the Chief Medical Director, General Hospital, Mbaukwu, claimed that the past administration funded private hospitals, neglecting state-owned hospitals which was for the masses.
Anazodo described the working environment was bad as according to him, most government hospitals do not have doctors’ quarters, perimeter fences, water supply, no chairs and leaking roofs.
He further said that the structure of medical workers was faulty as they were not positioned to rise to director and permanent secretary positions, while doctors in the local government councils were meant to work under non-doctors.
“There is need for massive funding in the public health sector of Anambra as private hospitals were funded to the utter detriment of state hospitals and health services should not be a commercial venture.
“We ended one year industrial action with an agreement of 50 per cent CONMESS implementation with a committee to review it periodically but that committee never took off.
“Some of us have been on Level 17 for a long time but with the structure we have now, we are mere chiefs but neither directors nor permanent secretaries.’’
Responding, Obiano said he had a three-pronged policy to tackle the challenges in the health sector.
He listed them as infrastructure upgrading, enhanced welfare for medical personnel, training of doctors and nurses and cost effectiveness for patient access.
He promised to work with the doctors and urged them to enhance their efficiency and increase the access of the rural population to government hospitals.
The governor solicited the cooperation and commitment of the doctors to assist him realise his plans for the sector.
