NATIONAL ASSOCITION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS)

 

BEING THE TEXT OF COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF 68TH SENATE MEETING OF NANS HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT BETWEEN THURSDAY 27TH-FIRDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER, 2013

PREAMBLE

The 68th Senate meeting of NANS was convened by the Deputy Senate President of NANS- Comrade John Shima to discuss myriad of issues affecting the education sector, the National Association of Nigerian Students and the state of the Nigerian nation. As convened, the senate meeting commenced on the 27th of September, 2013.

PROCEEDINGS

Haven waited for the commencement of Senate meeting and the presence of the convener- Comrade John Shima (DSP of NANS) all to no avail f realizing that the DSP merely convened the Senate meeting to. embark on a political tour of projects embarked upon by the Governor Rotimi Amaechi led Rivers State Government, the Senators in attendance became impatient in the face of grievous allegations against the DSP Comrade John Shima for abdicating his responsibilities in preference for a purported project tour of Rivers State other than the purpose for which the senate meeting was convened.

Consequently, the senate Clerk-Comrade Julius Nnaji and the Zonal co-coordinator of NANS zone "B" Comrade Chinonso Obasi were mandated to commence of the 68th Senate session. Thereafter, all legitimate senators were properly accredited for deliberations

STATE OF THE NATION

The NANS Senate observed that in spite of government efforts at curbing the disturbing spate of violence and security breaches especially in the Northern part of Nigeria, the trouble- shooters and insurgent groups seems not ready to accept the peace deal offered by the Federal Government in bringing lasting peace to troubled areas.

The NANS senate encourages the Federal Government and Stale Governors in the affected states to intensify efforts at dialoging further on the peace deal. Also, the NANS senate appealed to all insurgent groups to in the interest of safe . guarding the collective unity of Nigeria sheathe their sword and embrace peace.

The NANS Senate appeals to the political class in the nation to as a matter of urgency resolve all pending political crisis in the polity especially now that the 2015 general elections is beginning to generate heat. Nigerians expect a mature political ideological contest that can transform re-position our nation amongst the comity of nations other than brigandage, thuggery and mudslinging.

STATE OF NANS

After giving a detailed report on the state of NANS vis-a-vis intervention in campus struggle, ongoing effort at making ASUUto reconsider her stance on the reopening of our University shut over three mouths ago, the NANS Senate rose in one accord and unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the NANS President .Comrade Gbadebo Yinka for his untiring effort as rejuvenating and repositioning NANS for the overall good ot the" academic community.

Furthermore the Senate restates her commitment to continue the support giving to the NANS President toward achieving greater efficiency. The NANs Senate dissatisfied with the anti organization activities of the Deputy Senate President- Comrade JOhn, Shima after carefully deliberating on allegations of gross misconduct abuse of office, issuance of un-authourised statements, insubordination to constituted authorities; raping of a 17year old admission seeker (Miss Joan Ernonl) at Asaba sometime in May, 2013.

Senators unanimously agreed to impeach and expel him from office and the organization.

Subsequently, a motion, was moved by Comrade Godson C. Bishop President of FUT, Owerri and seconded by Comrade Omife Stanley, President Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagwu. Ebonyi State to elect a Senate President to fill the vacuum created by the loss of our, beloved late Senate President. Comrade Donald Onukaogu who died on June 13,2013 to a road accident along side four other notable NANS leaders. At the end of voting, Comrade Maxwell Soye (out-going SUG President, Uniport)

Emerged the winner unopposed with a resounding voice vote by Senators in session. Election was also held into the office of the impeached and expelled former Deputy Senate President- Comrade John Shima. Comrade Henry Mark a 2001 Political Science student of Benue State University was elected into office as new Deputy Senate President of NANS.

The NANS Senate stripped Comrade Daniel Donald Onjeh (former NANS President) of his life membership status in NANS for corruptly enriching himself in the name of NANS by duping unsuspecting members of the public, recently by fraudulently

deceiving and extorting the tax payers money in Rivers State and for illegally operating the official website of NANS without permission of the NANS President, Both John Shima and Daniel Onjeh are hereby declared personal non-grata on all campuses

and also barred from attending all NANS activities henceforth. The entire public is hereby put on notice as anyone dealing with them in the name of NANS does so at his or her own individual, governmental and or corporate rise.

STATE OF EDUCATION

The NANS Senate for the umpteenth time frowns at the proscription of student unionism by Management

of some tertiary institutions and call for immediate conduct of democratic election across our campuses for Students unionisms the bad rock for building future leaders.          "

 

The NANS Senate condemns in all totality the recent appointment of the inglorious former Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, lie Ife, Professor Wale Omole asa Pro Chancellor of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology , Ogbomosho.

The Senate unanimously calls for his immediate removal by the vtsltons) to LAUTECH for the involvement of Prof. Wale ornate in the sponsored killing of Com. Iwilade George (Africa ) while he was the Vice Chancellor of OAU.

The NANS Senate urge the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency adopt all the laudable Projects of the National leadership of NANS in the interest of generality of the Nigerian Students.

The NANS Senate appreciate the former Minister for Education Professor Ruqayat Rufai for her meritorious services while at the ministry and wishes her well in all her future endeavors.

 

The NANS Senate appreciates Mr. President-Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. GCFR on the new appointment of Chief Barr. Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike as Supervising Minister for Education and hope that his appointment will bring about a speedy resolution of the logjam between the Federal Government and ASUU.

 

 The NANS Senate adopts the name of the committee set up by the NANS President to score Mr. President- Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan I GCFR in his mid . term report, the report is expected to be out by 20lh November, 2013. The NANS Senate appreciates the Management of UNIPORT for granting us the ambience to host the senate meeting of NANS after management of Com Adeyemi Abdul-Hamid
