THE Chancellor, Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Council Area of Kwara State, Bishop David Oyedepo, has described “as inhuman” the ongoing strike of doctors in Nigerian public health sector.
Oyedepo, at a pre-convocation press briefing of the university Thursday in Omu-Aran, believed that human life should receive more attention than any other considerations, just as he prayed for the nation’s political leaders for divine guidance on the issue.
Though he believed that the alleged financial mismanagement of the nation’s economic resources could not be divorced from some of the burning issues canvassed by the striking doctors, he nevertheless noted that the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) should emulate leaders of other professional bodies who despite their own challenges, have failed to call out their workers on strike.
According to the chancellor, while fielding reporters’ questions, “industrial actions are things prompted by economic mismanagement. It is not limited to our nation. But we should pray more to God to help our leaders on the right decisions to take.
“It is inhuman for medical people to close their eyes to dying patients. If the NMA and other stakeholders in the health sector had managed it well, it would not have reached the level it is today. Trade dispute is a global thing. If some people are deficient in trade dispute management, they should go and learn it. There are other groups too who have trade disputes but they successfully managed them. If you answer these questions of the NMA now, others will start agitation again. Nigeria indeed needs prayers.”
