The National Executive Council (NEC) of the medical and dental Consultant's Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) held its second regular meeting for the Benin City from 28th to 30 April 2014. During the meeting issues of healthcare delivery, national security, and welfare of consultants were discussedNEC observed as follows:
1. That the pervading state of insecurity in some part of the country is worrisome. NEC specifically condemned the abduction of innocent school girls in Chibok, Borno State and the unfortunate bomb blast in Nyanya which left scores of Nigeria dead and many more wounded
2. That the frequent kidnapping of Consultants in some states in the country, which has reached an alarming level, is condemnable. This evil acts are detrimental to effective health care delivery.
3. That haeassment of Consultants by medical Laboratory Scientists is still occurring in hospitals in Nigeria.
4. That Honoray Consultants in teaching hospitals are paid as low as less than 20,000.00 Naira (Twenty Thousand Naira) per month for clinical duties, which include running clinics, conducting ward rounds and caring for inpatients, performing surgical and other procedures and several other clinical related activities.
5. That Consultants that are paid through IPPIS receive only 11 months call duty per year even when they take calls every month of the yearFollowing extensive deliberations, MDCAN NEC resolved as follows:
1. That the federal, state and local governments and national assembly should take all necessary steps to immediately curtail the rising spate of extrame violence and wastage of lives, which have not only weakened confidence in the leadership of the country, but are also threatening the future of Nigeria as a geographical entity. We also call on traditional rulers, chiefs, and other well-meaning citizen above all interests that will not serve the collective good of all Nigerians.
2. That the leadership of the country give priority to safe release of abducted girls of chibok, Borno state, who should have the right of education like other human begin the planet.
3. That the federal and State Governments should take action to ensure the sadety of Consultants, release of several that are currently abducted, and prevention of abductions of all Nigerian.
4. That suspected kidnappers that are apprehended should be brought to justice speedy.
5. That the management and boards of hospitals in the country must institute measures to stop harassment of Medical consultant, and ensure safe work environment for all hospitals staff.
6. That the management and boards of hosptal in the country should ensure appropriate disciplinary action against any staff who engages in acts of violence against Consultants, interns. Residents, and any staff who engaage in ct of violence against consultants, interns, Residents, and any doctor that works under consultants.
7. That the management and boards of hospitals be reminded of the communique issued after the last emergency NEC meeting of MDCAN held in March 2014 stating clearly that creation of unsafe environment for doctors to excharge their duties will inevitably lead to immediate withdrawal of services unless safety is guaranteed
8. That remuneration for clinical for clinical duty of Honorary Consultants in Teaching Hospitals Should be reviewed urgently to ensure uninterrupted delivert of helth care services and training of medical students at all Teaching Hospitals in the country
9. That payments of call duty allowances to Consultaants, hich shoud reward work done, should not be fixed arbitranily
