The Nigerian Optometric Association held her 37th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference with the theme: Public, Private Partnership in Deliveting Quality Eyecare Services, in Umuahia, Abia State from Wed. 17th July to Sat. 20th July, 2013. Issues affecting the nation, the health care delivery system and the profession of Optometry were dejiberated upon exhaustively and analyzed leading to the following resolutions:-
1. Whereas there has been continuous threat by various ethnic, religiotl!s and political insurgencies to the peaceful and corporate existence of Nigeria.
2. Whereas some polltlclans are. unduly heating up the polity, creating tension all over the place, out of personal interest, greed, avarice and aggrandizement without regard to the survival of our hard won nascent democracy.
3. Whereas there is increasing wave of fraud, armed robbery, kidnapping across the length and breadth of the country.
4. Whereas the National Health bill is still in the works in the National Assembly and
5. Whereas some of our children in the various public university systems are presently at home due to the recent ASUU Strike.
It was resolved and it is hereby resolved:
1 That we commend the Federal Government of Nigeria for the bold, decisive and sometimes difficult and painful actions taken to restore order, normalcy
and decorum to our country Nigeria. Nigeria is better off as one corporate entity than as fragments.
2 That the frequent and persistent utterances of some of our politicians and ethnic militias threatening fire and brimstone now and again on the country if they or their sponsors fail to grab power in 2015 should be checked immediately to preserve our democracy which was won at the cost of some lives.
3 That we commend the present effort of the Nigeria Police, the Military and other Security agencies in the war against fraud, armed robbery, kidnapping etc, even at the risk of their own lives. However, we urge and plead with the Federal Government, State Government, Local Government and the private sector to create employment opportunities for our teaming youths
comprising tertiary, secondary and primary school graduates whose employment rate is currently put at 40%
4 That we commend the effort of the President and Commander - in - Chief of the Armed forces of Nigeria, His Excellency, Dr Goodluck Ebelle Jonathan. GCFR, Minister of Health,
Professor C .O.Onyebuchi Chukwu, the Nigerian Senate and the Federal House of Representative for their effort in crafting for the first time, a National Health Bill. However, we urge the National Assembly to take into consideration the input from the various professional bodies in the health sector in producing a Health Bill , that will serve ttie health interest of all Nigerians.
5 That we call on both the Federal Government and ASUU to urgently take steps ln resolving the present impasse and get our children back to school for "an idle mind is the devils' workshop"
6 That we commend the Minister of Health for his untiring efforts towards integrating all professional bodies in the Health Sector into the National Health System. This has resulted in the present relative peace being witnessed in the Health Sector in a long time.
We urge you to continue until total success is achieved "for the reward for hard work is more work" .
7 That we urge the various tiers of government, Federal, State and Local government to create employment opportunities for full time Optometrists and for Optometrists on internship training in our hospitals.
Finally, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, the President and members of this executive council and the entire members of the Nigerian OptometriC Association wish to commend and thank the Governor and people of Abia State, led by Chie Dr Sir T.A. Orji-(Ochendo Global) for the wonderful support and hospitality accorded us. It was unprecedented. We came, saw and we believed. God bless you and your people.
