OWERRI - The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, NMCN, has said it would not hesitate to impose sanctions on any of its members whose conduct fell short of the prescribed professional standard.
The Council's Board Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Jumare, read the riot act, yesterday, while flagging of a three-day workshop in Owerri, organised for examiners in nursing and midwifery education in Nigeria.
He said that apart from developing curricula and training for nurses and midwives, the Council was alos charged with the mandate of ensuring that the quality of nurses produced in the country, conformed with international best practices.
Alhaji Jumare explained that "the essennce of the national workshop was to improve the skills of examiners to effectively assess candidates during school and professional examinations in order to produce competent and very reliable practitioners.
"The Council is mandates by law to regulated the standards of nursing and midwifery education and practice in Nigeria, and to review such standards from time to time to meet the changing health needs of the society."
He called on all nurses and midwives to remain committed to their duties, especially at this trying moment in the nation's medical history.
The NMECN board Chairman commiserated with the families and friends of the two nurses who died recently of Ebola disease and urged health cae givers not to relent in giving adequate care to patients.
He charged them to observe the universal precautions of hand washing, use of sanitisers and protective wears, while attending to patients.
Declaring the workshop open Imo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Edward Ihejirika, said the government had taken measures to improve the quality of learning in health institutions in the state.
