The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, may be out for a showdown with the Delta State Hospitals Management Board, DSHMB, as it was gathered that the union is battle ready to resist attempt by the board to abdicate on the agreement reached with the state government over full employment of casual and voluntary/medical corps.
A statement by the state Secretary of the union, F.A. Okoh, reminded the board that the international labour law does not accept casualisation of workers and viewed the action of the HMB as a calculated attempt to ridicule the nursing profession.

The union hinted that the board had refused to accept the terms of the agreement reached with the government, just as it accused the board of plotting to give opportunities to their political cronies and relations instead of those who had served voluntary.
The union also rejected the conditions spelt out in the placement letter, noting that it was synonymous to bringing slavery into the system, as it called on the state government to urgently intervene.
But when contacted, the office of the Director of Hospital Services denied the allegations, noting that there were no plans to deny those who had worked voluntarily, adding that the board was only trying to expand the employment scope to accommodate more qualified persons since those who were on the voluntary service were too few to cover the gaps.
