The Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kaduna State, Dr. Mohammed Sani Ibrahim, has dismissed belief in some quarters that the current  nationwide strike by doctors would allow spread of the   Ebola disease.

According to him, the fact that public hospitals are not working does not in any way aid spread of the virus among the population. He noted that the only measure to curtail its spread is the use of universal precautions and health education.

“Ebola spreads more within communities when people do not take precautionary measures. Now, if you open up hospitals, what do you want to do since there is no treatment or how does opening the hospitals help people to wash their hands? The only way is, if cases are detected early, they can be supported with measures like helping the patient to breathe well if he/she cannot breathe well or do blood transfusion where the victim is bleeding. All health workers also need to be protected to avoid spread of the disease,” he said.
