The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has cautioned the Federal Government against politicising the health sector to the detriment of the healthcare of Nigerians.

Addressing a press conference in Osogbo on Tuesday, chairman of the association in the state, Anthony Onipede, said the happenings in the health sector and in particular the on-going strike action show that politics has being introduced into the management and running of affairs of the sector.

He explained that actions of the current crop of politicians would bring about disintegration in the sector rather than advancing the course of healthcare delivery in the country.

 

While noting that the association deserves due recognition from the government because it was the sector that deals with human lives, he said people that are trained in the system or having medical training should dictate the pace of things in the sector, and that not following the plan is the cause of the current crisis in the sector.

 

Onipede vowed that the association would resist any attempt to politicise the medical and dental profession.

The association also flayed the creation of multiple directors and awarding of political titles, warning that such may bring adverse consequent to the patients.

Onipede said, “W are opposed to self-serving and disruptive positions and titles that will not augur well for the system and ultimately, the patients.”
