The 26th meeting of the NAN was held in Akure, Ondo state from Sunday, 16th to Thursday, 21st of February, 2014
It was attended by about 400 delegates from different parts of Nigeria, Five international resource persons drawn from the United States, Europe and Ghana also attended
The scientific conference commenced with a preconference update for nephrologists (paediatrics and adult), nephrology nurses, and dialysis technicians held concurrently at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo (the primary host of the conference).
The conference was formally declared opened by the Executive Governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Minmiko who was also honoured for the gaint strides he has been talking in the delivery of specalized and impactful healthcare sevices.
Below are the main resolutions reached at the end of the 4-day event:
The Association notes with dismay the non regulation of the activities of newer dislysis centres in the country and calls for partnership with relvant agencies concerned in streamlining the activities of such centre especially the need to have trained nephrology and dialysis personnel to man such centres.
The association notes the increasing rate of organ trafficking and medical tourism in the country and calls for an effective legislation against the practice (of the former) and also calls on the govenment to encourage local centres in the delivery of transplantation services by funding and enhancing capacity development in order to reduce capital flight as a result of the medical tourism the association calls for increased awareness of the simlicity and advantages of peritoneal dialysis and appleals to the authorites concerned to help in granting import duty walvers in sourcing for peritoneal dialysis fluids relevant rechnology, consumables. Local Production peritoneal dialysis materials should also be encouraged.
Acute kidney injury as a result of infections, bleeding disorders and flood losses from obstrtric causes, accidents is still a major challenge in our country. There is therefor a need to encourage health promoting habits in limiting the incidence.
The association appreciates the new efforts of the National Health insurance Services(NHIS) in granting some dialysis sessions to patients with kidney failure and hopes that with time, this would be futher expanded.
The association is appreciative of the support of multi-national organisations/corporate bodies in supporting kidney Day activities and calls on other organisations to show interest in this regard.
Tje association commends with delight the giant strides being made in the delivery of health care services by the Executive Governor of Ondo State His Execellency, Dr.Olusegun Mimike,especially in the establishment of a state of the art dialysis centre a world class trauma centre and in the enhanced delivery of a globally acciamed maternal and child health services.
Anew Executive Council led by Dr. Ebun Barngbye was inauguarted at the Annual General Meeting (Other members of the Executive Council are as listed in the appendix to this communique)
