Nurses in Lagos State have raised the alarm over the impact of a refuse dump site near Alimosho General Hospital in Lagos, saying it posed serious health challenge to student nurses that inhale its emission.

He spoke at the 9th Annual Nurses’ Scientific conference with the theme: ‘Professionalism: A tool for Optimising Quality Nursing Care Delivery’.

The conference held in Ikeja, Lagos.Participants at the conference include nurses drawn from 26 hospitals, under the Health Service Commission, (HSC) in Lagos State.

“The dump site is making the environment not conducive for learning and the clinical care of patients,” Awojide said. According to him, there was a directive that the Ministry of Environment in the state should relocate the dump site but two years after, nothing has been done?” The Chairman of the NANNM in Lagos State Council, also called for a review of nurses salary every three years.

Awojide further explained that nurses want the creation of Directorate of Nursing Services at the Primary Health Care Board and that there should be appointment of a substantive director of nursing services.

He added that there has been expansion of health facilities with less number of nurses and he appealed that special consideration to be given to their many members that have been stagnated on GL 14 for many years.
