The Nursing and midwifery council of Nigeria has sympathized with the families, friends and colleagues of our departed professional colleagues who contracted the deadly ebola virus while trying to save the life of an infected patient.
The council registrar Alhaji Jumare Mustapha made this call of sympathy today at the council examiners workshop 2014 with the theme "professional examinations for nurses and midwives in nigeria, prospects and challenges in a technological Era held in owerri, Imo state. Alhaji Jumare said " i cannot complete this speech without talking briefly on the most topical issue that is a great public health challenge for the world and nigeria in particular. As you are all aware two of the victims of the ebola haemorrhagic fever in Nigeria are nurses.
He added "the NMCN sympathizes with the families, friends and colleagues of our departed professional colleagues who contracted this deadly virus while trying to save the life of an infected patient. To us these great Nurses are the Nightingale of our times who gave their all for a dying man. That is the spirit of the registered Nurses and midwife.
We hereby call on all nurses and midwives to please observe the universal precautions of hand washing with soap, running water, use of sanitizers and protective wears, strictly when dealing with all patients dead or alive.
He concluded by calling on all nurses and midwives to remain committed to their duties at this trying moments by standing with the patients and all those who require our services. After this workshop, council will intensify discussions with relevant persons and agencies on the roles and responsibilities of nurses and midwives in this fight and how the interests of the nurses and midwives can be protected.
