Ekiti NMA Threatens Strike over Wage Dispute

The Nigerian Medical Association in Ekiti State has given the state government  a 21-day ultimatum to  pay doctors in local government the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale or be ready for an industrial action from July 10.

The Chirman of the NMA in the state, Dr. Obitade Obimakinde, stated this at a briefing in Ado Ekiti on Friday.

Obimakinde, who is a consultant surgeon  at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, said the new salary scale was meant to be enjoyed by all doctors irrespective of whether they were working for state or local government.

He also asked the government to stop  the “heavy tax” imposed on doctors’ call duty and other professional allowances.

Obimakinde said the NMA would be left with no choice but to embark on strike from July 10, if the state government refused to address the salary and the tax issues.

He described the decision of the government to stop the payment of CONMESS to just 18 doctors in local government councils as “unjust”.

He explained that the NMA had written several letters to Governor Kayode Fayemi to intimate him of the issues surrounding the doctors’ salaries.

The NMA chairman, who said the union was ready for a showdown with the government, however, did not rule out the possibility of having a dialogue to resolve the crisis.

Obimakinde said the salary reduction was unjustifiable, saying doctors at local government now enjoyed 72 per  cent of the new salary scale already approved.

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Olusola Fasubaa, did not pick the calls made to his telephone by our correspondent.  He did not also respond to the text message sent to him.
