Health workers in Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, EKSUTH, Ado-Ekiti, have threatened to down tools over unpaid wages.
The workers, under the aegis of Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, in a letter to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, said they were aggrieved over “the refusal of the state government to release the monthly subvention of EKSUTH for July and August 2014.”
This, the union noted, “has made it practically impossible for the workers to be paid their salaries for the months of July and August 2014.”
It said: “We will not be able to guarantee industrial harmony in EKSUTH, Ado-Ekiti if its subventions for the months of July and August 2014 are not paid by Wednesday September 3, 2014.”
The letter was signed by Mr Kunle Esan, chairman, National Union of Allied Health Practitioners, NUAHP; Mr. Samuel Adegbuyi, chairman of National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, and Mr Sunday Olajide, chairman of Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, MHWUN, and their respective secretaries.
The union claimed its members last received their salaries in June 2014, and lamented that “this is happening at a time when the health workers are expected at their duty posts even in the face of the fear of Ebola Virus infection that has quietly found its way into the country.
“These same workers who last received their salaries in the month of June 2014 spend money personally for protection and prevention of this deadly disease in their work places,” it stated.
According to them, “all efforts to get government to respond positively have been met with frivolous excuses and indefinite promises.”
