The Enugu State Government says it will train epidemiologists in the Ministry of Health to forestall the outbreak of Ebola disease in the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr George Eze, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu on Friday that the training would enable them to easily detect potential sufferers of the disease.
Eze said the epidemiology unit had been fighting other epidemics and would not hesitate in the current one.
The commissioner urged the citizens to maintain a clean environment to avoid contact with the virus.
Eze explained that the virus would not survive in a clean and well disinfected environment.
He said, “We have an epidemiology unit in the Ministry of Health with experts who are saddled with the responsibility of fighting epidemics like this.
“They just finished battling with Lassa Fever and they are set to fight this one. We will also empower them by training them to know the symptoms and ways to contain the virus.
“We will also go into sensitisation through the media, to let our people know the ways to detect this virus. People should wash their hands regularly and avoid contact or unnecessary hand-shakes with people.
“They should also use disinfectants and maintain a clean environment because this virus cannot survive in a clean environment.”
On the strike by the Nigerian Medical Association, the commissioner said some doctors empowered by the government were working in the state-owned teaching and cottage hospitals in the state.
“Doctors in our teaching hospitals and cottage hospitals are working. Citizens should visit hospitals in the state if they notice any symptom of the virus for further investigation,” he said.
