Experts Condemn Substandard Dialysis Centres

The President, Nigerian Association of Nephrology, Dr. Ebun Bamgboye, has raised the alarm over increasing number of sub-standard dialysis centres in the country.

Bamgboye, who disclosed this at a free kidney screening exercise organised by St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos Island, for over 500 residents, noted that many dialysis centres were controlled by unskilled personnel.

He said investigations conducted by the NAN showed that only 74 out of the over 200 dialysis centres across the country were registered and operated by experts.

He stated, “An ideal dialysis unit should have an appropriately trained nephrology doctor, a nephrology nurse, a dialysis technician and good water supply, among others. But most of the centres have none of these. This poses great danger to the patient.

“Dialysis is a highly technical procedure that involves exchange of body fluids such as blood and other wastes in the body. When supervised by unskilled persons, the patient may contract deadlier infections.”

He also accused some operators of dialysis centres of conniving with health professionals who recommend dialysis for patients who do not need it.

Bamgboye said, “Some patients actually do not require dialysis; but some of the units go ahead and dialyse a patient they know cannot withstand the process. When that happens, the outcome is usually negative.”

According to him, some centres are using inappropriate consumables at inappropriate time. “For example, anaemic patients or those who have unstable blood pressure are dialysed in some centres, exposing them to avoidable risks.

“That is why it is important that any unit be staffed by skilled individuals in order to prevent violation of ethical practices. This is where we are asking the government to come in,” he added.
