A Yola High Court on Monday sentenced a fake medical doctor, Ibrahim Mustapha, to 10 years imprisonment for using a forged medical certificate to practise.
Ibrahim stood trial with two other defendants — the medical doctor whose certificate he forged and the man who helped to forge the certificate he used to get employment into the Adamawa State Medical Health Management Services Board, where he rose to the rank of a principal medical officer before he was caught.
Justice Nathan Musa condemned the conduct of the fake doctor, wondering the countless sorrow the fake doctor must have caused families of victims over the 13 years period he had practised.
The fake doctor had pleaded guilty to nine out of the 10 counts preferred against him by the state.
But the judge, who said the plea did not in any way warrant his consideration of the conviction, sentenced the defendant to 50 years imprisonment to forestall future acts. He said, “On count 1, 2 and 3, I sentence him to six months each with the option of a fine of N20,000 each.
“On count 8, I sentence him to three years imprisonment with the option of N50,000 fine. “On count 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10, I sentenced him to ten years of prison term on each of the counts without option of fines.”
Justice Nathan added that all the terms would run concurrently. Mustapha had confessed to forging MBBS credentials after his arrest by the DSS but denied causing the death of any patient throughout his career.
