Minister of the Federal Capital (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed, has constituted a technical committee to manage and curtail the threat of Ebola virus in the territory.  Unveiling the committee at the Life Camp, Abuja yesterday, Mohammed made it clear that the measure was a proactive, as no case of infection has been recorded in the FCT so far.

Terms of reference of the committee, headed by the FCT Secretary of Health and Human Services Secretariat, Dr. Demola Onakomaiya, include working out modalities for responding to the threat of the virus, and creating awareness on its nature and symptoms.

The panel also has to proactively prepare an action plan for its containment, work out ways for effective surveillance of the population, visitors and travelers, and recommend tools and method for managing cases if they arise, among others.

However, Mohammed restated government’s decision to designate and isolate a ward at Kuje General Hospital for the management of possible victims of Ebola fever, just as he allayed fears by some residents of the town over the choice of the hospital.

According to him, all precautionary measures have been put in place to ensure that the designation of the ward will not endanger the health of medical staff and other workers at the hospital as well as residents of Kuje generally.

He therefore urged leaders, especially traditional rulers and youths in the area, to cooperate and ensure that government’s well-intentioned measures in this respect are not undermined. He cautioned against incitement of the people, stressing that the FCTA would never do anything that would expose the people to danger.

Meanwhile, Onakomaiya has said that Ebola fever is not a death sentence, rather, it could be managed and contained. He noted that Nigeria is strong enough to contain its spread, stressing that the disease spread fast in such countries as Liberia and Guinea because they were in crisis situation.

Also, the representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Rui Vas, commended President Goodluck Jonathan and the FCT minister for the proactive measures, stressing that for the virus to be contained, the nation needs to move as fast as possible.

Representative of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr Hakeem Oyeyemi Lawal, who is also on the staff of the National Hospital, Abuja, pledged the body’s readiness to collaborate with the FCT Administration. He hinted that their nationwide would soon be suspended in view of the current national emergency.
