The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) yesterday inaugurated the Benue State steering committee for the first phase of conditional cash transfer programme for pregnant women.
National Director of NPHCDA, Dr. Ado Muhammed, said in Makurdi that the federal government through its Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) decided to improve maternal and child health in the country.
He noted that under the SURE-P, the government muted the idea of N5, 000 cash incentive for every pregnant woman who meets the full continuum of ante and post natal care.
Represented by a pharmacist, Musa Dagana, the NPHCDA boss said the agency in partnership with states and local governments has already commenced the project in nine states of the federation and would begin with Kwande Local Government Area in Benue State.
He said relevant manpower in rural areas including 4000 midwives, 1000 community extension and village health workers have been enlisted under the programme which links 1000 primary health care facilities to 250 general hospitals across the country.
